The CSO (Central Statistics Office) released their most recent Irish crime statistics report; the findings are concerning. Over the past 12 months* burglaries have increased by 9% compared to the previous year**. This unsettling yearly increase trend with a total of 9,858 break-ins highlights the need for all homeowners to be more stringent when it comes to implementing home security measures, especially as we are experiencing longer, darker winter evenings now.

The CSO data outlines that 20 of the 28 Garda divisions have experienced an increase in break-ins within this period. The Tipperary Garda division experienced the highest rate of increase in the country at 59% (356 burglaries), the combined Roscommon and Longford division increased by 55% (257 burglaries), Cork West by 45% (77 burglaries) and Westmeath by 34% (273 burglaries).

The report did outline encouraging decreases in burglaries within some divisions, as both the Dublin Eastern Garda division and the combined Sligo and Leitrim Garda division had the highest decrease in burglaries at -19% (337 burglaries and 132 burglaries respectively). Louth Garda division experienced at -10% (314 burglaries) and Waterford Garda division -8% (180 burglaries).

Homeowners need to do more to help reduce the number of break-ins and lower the current Irish crime statistic trends. By implementing simple but effective home security tips we can reduce the risk of burglaries within our homes.

Winter home security recommendations:

  • Lock windows and doors: Always lock your doors and shut windows when you aren’t home. Never leave spare keys under the mat.
  • Light up: Keep a light on when you’re away, to make it look as if you’re home, or better still if you have smart plugs, use them.
  • Safeguard your valuables: Never leave valuables in plain sight, securely store them away in your home.
  • Neighbour assistance: Ask a neighbour to take in your post and bins while you are away so that it looks as if you are home.
  • Get a monitored alarm: Having a monitored home alarm will keep you protected 24/7 whether you are at home or away. PhoneWatch’s system also monitors against smoke incidents. Arm it and check for updates via the app from anywhere in the world.
